We are hiring! We are looking to fill a position as Intake worker for Social Services to assist in our efforts to provide refugee claimants with housing, immigration and settlement support.
The Romero House community welcomes refugee claimants with housing, immigration and settlement support. The Intake student will help refugee claimants find emergency shelter, navigate the refugee determination process, navigate social assistance, open a bank account, get a local phone number, and enroll in school. They will provide material support like food, clothing, toiletries, baby products, and other donated items. They will provide information and referrals for housing searches, tenant issues, medical care, employment services. They will also greet guests to our community centre, answer our main phone line, and receive in-kind donations and packages.
Duties and responsibilities
Review claimant background information, interview claimants to obtain case history and prepare intake reports
Assess claimants’ relevant skill strengths and needs
Assist claimants to sort out options and develop plans of action while providing necessary support and assistance
Assess and investigate eligibility for social benefits
Provide information about the refugee process and other settlement processes
Educate clients on the housing search process using our guide
Assist clients in preparation of forms
Accompany clients to nearby facilities such as public transit, employment services, food banks, as needed
Refer claimants to other social services or assist claimants in locating and utilizing community resources including legal, medical and financial assistance, housing, employment, transportation, day care and other services
Keep records concerning visits with clients
Identify candidates who might benefit from our volunteer housing search support and make appropriate referrals
Support day-to-day activities of clients and staff in the community centre
Consult with supervisor before concluding the interview for any additional information or referrals we can provide.
Meet with claimants to assess their progress, give support and discuss any difficulties or problems
Qualifications (Required)
Experience in a social service environment as an employee, placement student, or volunteer OR experience in relevant educational programs such as social work, social service work, immigration and settlement studies, or psychology
Proficiency in English
Proficiency with computers
Ability to manage multiple responsibilities independently and as part of a team
Assets (Helpful but not required)
Proficiency in other languages, especially Spanish
Experience working in diverse communities
Self awareness with respect to power, privilege, and prejudice and tools to promote equity, diversity, and inclusion
Experience helping people look for housing
Experience with the Romero House community
Proficiency with Google Workspace, including Gmail, Calendar, Sheets, Forms
Experience with Salesforce or similar client records management software
