We invite you to watch the video of our annual Howcroft Lecture recording for 2023. The lecture series honours one of the founding members of Romero House, Lorne Howcroft, and his commitment to faith and justice.
Our speaker this year was Ausma Malik. The first hijab-wearing Muslim woman elected to public office in Canada, Councillor Malik is known for staring down hate and inspiring hope for racial justice, economic reconstruction, and democratic renewal. The topic of her talk was “The Power of In-Between“:
Where is community made? Community is formed away from the spotlight. It’s made in the seemingly ordinary interactions between neighbours, the prosaic negotiations between people on the street, the invisible encounters that make spaces of belonging. These are places of change and power, where compassion, faith and justice are not only ideas, but are lived.
Ausma Malik.
