RECEPTIONIST
Description: RECEPTIONIST TUESDAY and/or WEDNESDAYS
- Answer phone calls and welcome in-person walk-ins with kindness and professionalism
- Understand needs and refer people to the right services or staff
- Support problem-solving by following clear intake guidelines and knowing when to ask for support
- Check and log voicemails and calls using Google Sheets
- Respond to donation inquiries based on current Romero House needs
- Provide interpretation (phone or in person) when needed
- Support with light administrative and reception tasks as they arise
Scheduling: One consistent day per week (Tuesdays and/or Wednesdays)
Time commitment: Minimum commitment of 4 months
Skills required:
- Fluency in English and Spanish
- Strong active listening and problem-solving skills
- Comfortable using technology (Google Sheets, Forms, email)
- Able to read and follow written instructions
- Flexible, proactive, and a quick learner
- Patient, compassionate, and respectful when working with newcomers
- Willingness to interpret when needed
COMPUTER TUTOR (ADULTS)
Description:
We are seeking compassionate volunteers with basic computer skills to support refugee individuals and families in building essential digital literacy. This role focuses on helping newcomers gain confidence in using technology for everyday needs such as communication, education, and accessing services.
Responsibilities include:
- Assisting with basic computer use, including the Microsoft Windows operating system
- Providing guidance on Microsoft Word and Microsoft PowerPoint
- Helping individuals create and manage email accounts
- Teaching how to safely navigate websites and access online resources
- Offering patient, respectful, and culturally sensitive support
Ideal volunteers:
- Have basic computer knowledge
- Are patient, supportive, and good communicators
- Are interested in helping refugee families adapt and thrive in a new environment
Scheduling: Flexible
GARDEN SUPPORT
Description:
- Helping in the Romero House community garden
- Weeding, watering as per a schedule and/or attending our weekly “gardening parties” to help in the garden and connect with residents
Scheduling: once a week, May-October (with flexibility for weeks away)
Time commitment: Spring-Fall
Skills required:
- Basic gardening knowledge
- A love for the outdoors and community building!
NOTE: Romero House clients and current volunteers get priority for this role.
HOUSING SEARCH VOLUNTEERS
Description:
Finding housing is the biggest challenge refugee families face. We are looking for volunteers who can help by sharing housing leads or connecting us with landlords, property owners, or community members who may be willing to rent an apartment or a room at an affordable rate to a refugee family.
Even one connection can make a life-changing difference for newcomers who face rental discrimination and are still building their networks in Canada.
- Coaching Romero House residents through house hunting
- Talking with landlords and advocating for Romero House residents
- Calling landlords and making appointments for viewing
- Accompanying residents to housing appointments as needed
- Filling out rental applications and forms
- Applying for home tenant insurance with newcomer family
Scheduling: 1-4 hours per week, depending on need and resident’s schedule
Time commitment: Up to 6 months per family assigned
Skills required:
- Fluency in Spanish or Persian is an asset
- General understanding of housing rental market in GTA
- General skills related to looking for housing / apartments
- Compassion and patience with folks new to the Canadian housing market
Kids Club Support
Description:
- Supporting the kids club leaders at weekly activities for a small group of Romero House children and youth (20-30 participants, ages 4-12).
- These volunteers will help facilitate activities with the children and youth who live at Romero House.
- Activities could include crafts, sports, games, excursions etc.
- May include travel to nearby locations by public transit, car, or walking e.g. park, library, entertainment
Scheduling: Tuesdays, 4:15-6:15pm. Meeting at St.-Martin-in-the-Fields Anglican Church parish hall at 151 Glenlake Avenue
Time commitment: minimum 4 months
Skills required:
- Experience working with diverse children and youth
- Patience and adaptability in changing activities for the number of participants, weather, other needs etc.
- Spanish or Persian is an asset!
