2387 Dundas Project

We are very excited about this project! As you may know, Romero House has begun leasing the small apartment building at 2387 Dundas Street West, which backs onto the laneway between Edna and Chelsea. Keep on reading to learn important details about the project. Below is more information about the project and how you can get involved.

Romero House has been welcoming refugee claimants to the West Bend neighbourhood since 1991. We own four homes in the neighbourhood and offer transitional housing, immigration and settlement support to families fleeing persecution from around the world. One of the unique features of Romero House is that we have staff and volunteers who live in our housing alongside the families we serve.

2387 Dundas Street West

Romero House is excited to be adding 2387 Dundas to our group of homes. The building will house nine refugee claimant families and three house coordinators and is set to open in mid-October. The house coordinators, Carmen, Mercy, and Marisol, have already moved into the building and are excited to get to know you.

For the past five years, the building was leased to Eva’s Initiatives for Homeless Youth. Before that, it had some tenants but was largely empty for twenty years. In the midst of a difficult housing market and conflicts around the world that are forcibly displacing more people than ever, we are grateful to be able to bring life to this wonderful space. We are grateful to the one long-standing tenant family in the building who has been very welcoming, even helping us to prepare rooms for families to move in.

Romero House is humbled by the support of countless neighbours over the years. Some answers our phone, help residents find jobs, or run our weekly food bank. We’re excited to continue to develop these relationships through this new building. We are working hard to maintain our community-centered approach, both within the building and at Romero House as a whole.

Want to get involved?

If you are interested in getting involved with this important project, here are some opportunities:

  • Attending our Open House at 2387 Dundas Street West on Thursday, October 3, 5-7pm. Come get a sneak peek at the building before families move in!
  • Cooking food for Thanksgiving lunch that we hold a lunch for residents of Romero House on Monday, October 14. Usually neighbours have often contributed delicious side dishes or dessert and we are cooking donated turkeys with the families. If you are interested, please send an email to Soyun Kim, our Community Programming Coordinator.
  • Volunteering at Romero House. Check out our current volunteer roles list that is regularly updated on our website. In serving more families, we will need more tutors, English conversation partners, Kids Club leaders, interpreters and more!
  • Donating furniture and household items on our donations request list to help get an apartment ready for a new family.

If our neighbours have questions or concerns about the building, please reach out to us. You can call (416) 763-1303 or email us at info@romerohouse.org. We are very open to feedback and want to contribute positively to the neighbourhood!
