On Monday, October 13th, the basement of the Church of St. Martin-in-the-Fields was filled with laughter, the aroma of delicious food, and the warmth of community as we gathered for our annual Romero House Thanksgiving Celebration. The function brought together over 100 people, including current and former residents, staff, volunteers, board members, donors, and neighbours.
Our guests represented communities from Africa, the Caribbean, Latin America, the Middle East, Asia, and Indigenous and settler communities of Canada. It was a true reflection of the vibrant mosaic that makes up Romero House.
At the heart of the meal were turkeys prepared by resident families, complemented by a potluck feast of side dishes, salads, fruits, and desserts. The food was such a hit that almost nothing was left by the end of the night!
Throughout the evening, guests enjoyed Thanksgiving Bingo, a Gratitude Tree, and a variety of children’s activities, like drawing, painting, and crafts. This year’s event was made possible by over 20 dedicated volunteers, who helped with planning, food service, entertainment, and cleanup. We thank them for all their hard work! We’re also deeply grateful to Royal St. George’s College for donating the turkeys and to our long-time partners at the Church of St. Martin-in-the-Fields for opening their welcoming space once again.
From all of us at Romero House: thank you for making this celebration such a meaningful space for our community!
